How we engage for testing

Three routes, chosen per programme. Many programmes combine them, for example a managed regression team plus placed HIL engineers.

Test project

We own a defined scope, such as a HIL regression suite, a DO-178C coverage closure or an ATE program release, against agreed work products and acceptance criteria.

Managed test team

A Stalwart-run team works to an agreed scope, service levels and reporting, and scales with your release cycle. See managed testing services.

Test engineers placed

HIL, automation, validation or ATE engineers join your team under your leads and processes, on contract, contract-to-hire or permanent terms. See hire test engineers.

What a test engagement delivers

Whichever route you choose, these are the work products an assessor, customer or certification authority will ask for.

  • Test strategy: test levels, methods, environments, entry and exit criteria, and which requirements are verified where across the V-model.
  • Test plans and specifications: test cases with inputs, expected results and pass criteria, structured to ISO/IEC 29119 or your own templates.
  • Bidirectional traceability from requirements to test cases and results, kept in your ALM tool such as Polarion, codebeamer, IBM DOORS Next or Jama Connect.
  • Test automation: scripts, libraries and CI jobs that rerun the suite on every build or nightly.
  • Coverage evidence: requirements coverage plus statement, branch or MC/DC structural coverage where the standard asks for it.
  • Test reports: results, defects, deviations and open issues, in a form that feeds the safety case, certification data or production release.

Testing trends shaping 2026 programmes

Regulation has made test evidence a market-access condition. UNECE R155 and R156 have applied to all new vehicles under EU type approval since July 2024, so cybersecurity and software-update testing sits in the type-approval file. Under the EU Cyber Resilience Act, reporting of actively exploited vulnerabilities and severe incidents has applied since 11 September 2026, and most other obligations, including conformity assessment, apply from 11 December 2027.

ADAS validation volume is rising. Euro NCAP's 2026 protocols are its biggest overhaul since 2009, adding ADAS robustness, HMI and driver-monitoring tests, and test-equipment vendor AB Dynamics reports more than 1,200 ADAS test variations, roughly double the previous cycle. Scenario-based methods built on ISO 34502 and ASAM OpenSCENARIO keep that volume manageable in simulation.

HIL remains the final gate before the vehicle, even as virtual ECUs move regression into CI. One estimate from Global Market Insights puts the HIL testing market at $1.27 bn in 2025, rising to $2.61 bn by 2034; MarketsandMarkets gives a lower $1.78 bn for 2030. In defence, MIL-STD-461H superseded 461G on 17 April 2026, although many contracts still call up 461G.

AI in testing is mostly at pilot stage. The World Quality Report 2025-26 (Capgemini and OpenText) finds 89% of organisations piloting or deploying generative AI in quality engineering, but only 15% have scaled it enterprise-wide. On safety-related work, AI output such as drafted test cases or log triage needs the same review as any other test artefact.

Frequently asked questions

Do you provide test engineers, test benches, or both?

Mainly engineers and test capability. Our engineers work on your HIL rigs, lab instruments and testers, or on benches you procure, and we can specify, integrate and commission a new bench through HIL test bench setup. Bench hardware is normally bought from the platform vendor and owned by you, which keeps calibration, licences and audit records in your hands.

Do you operate an accredited test laboratory?

No. For accredited EMI/EMC, environmental or safety testing we prepare you for the lab of your choice: test plans, tailoring, pre-compliance checks on development hardware, test procedures, witness support and failure diagnosis. The accredited lab runs the formal test and issues the report. See defence & aerospace testing.

What is the difference between SIL, HIL and vehicle-level testing?

SIL testing runs production code, or a virtual ECU, on a PC against simulated inputs, so it is fast and fits CI. HIL testing runs the real ECU against a real-time plant model with real I/O, which exposes timing, electrical and diagnostic behaviour. Vehicle-level testing confirms behaviour with real sensors, actuators and environment, and costs the most per test case.

Do we still need HIL if we already run virtual ECUs in CI?

Usually yes. Virtual ECUs move much of the functional regression earlier and free HIL capacity, but they do not exercise the real microcontroller, I/O drivers, analogue signals or electrical faults. HIL remains the gate for I/O, diagnostics, fault injection and timing before vehicle tests. The split is set in the test strategy, requirement by requirement.

What deliverables should a V&V partner provide for an ISO 26262 audit?

At minimum: a verification plan, test specifications traced to safety requirements, test results with deviations, unit-level structural coverage reports with justification for gaps, integration and HIL test reports, tool confidence evidence where needed, and a defect record. These feed the safety case and the functional safety assessment. See ISO 26262.

Can AI be used in testing for safety-critical projects?

Yes, with limits. AI can help draft test cases from requirements, suggest boundary values and cluster failures in long logs, but every output is reviewed like an engineer-written artefact. Tools whose output is relied on as certification evidence need qualification under DO-330 or a tool confidence assessment under ISO 26262-8. The World Quality Report 2025-26 shows most organisations are still piloting.

Can testing be delivered from Bengaluru when the hardware is in Europe or the US?

Often. Test design, automation, SIL execution and analysis run from Bengaluru, and HIL or lab campaigns run remotely through a secured connection, with local staff handling cabling and hardware changes. Where remote access becomes the bottleneck, a mirrored bench or engineers placed on site are the usual answers. Export-controlled work is scoped case by case before anything starts.
