Engagement models compared
Pick the model by who should manage the work and how long you need the skills. Most teams combine two or more.
| Model | Who manages the work | How it is billed | Best for | Typical commitment |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Staff augmentation | You direct the engineer day to day; Stalwart employs them and handles payroll and compliance | Time and material, per engineer per month | Peaks, niche skills and certification sprints inside your own process | Months, extendable while the work lasts |
| Contract-to-hire | You direct the engineer; Stalwart employs them until conversion | Time and material during the contract, then a conversion fee set in the contract | Testing fit before a permanent offer, or bridging long notice periods | A contract period agreed upfront, then conversion to your payroll |
| Permanent recruitment | You employ and manage the engineer from day one | One-time recruitment fee agreed before the search starts | Core roles in your own entity in India | One search per role |
| Dedicated team | Stalwart runs the team and its delivery against your roadmap and priorities | Monthly fee for an agreed team composition | A standing capability you do not yet want to employ directly | Longer term, with an option to move to Build-Operate-Transfer |
| Managed testing | Stalwart owns test execution and reporting against an agreed scope | Per test scope, milestone or reserved capacity | Test campaigns where you want results, evidence and reports, not headcount | Per campaign or release cycle |
Why specialist engineering staffing differs from generalist recruiting
Screening by practising engineers
Candidates are interviewed by engineers who do the same work, on configuration, debug and standards problems. See how we vet engineers.
Standards and tools, not keywords
We screen for named work products: an ASIL D safety case, MC/DC coverage evidence, a UVM testbench or a CAPL test suite, not a line on a CV.
Hiring and testing under one roof
Most firms sell either people or test services. We do both, so you can staff a team and hand us the test campaign under the same standard.
A model for India's notice periods
Senior engineers often serve long notice periods. Contract-to-hire and staff augmentation keep work moving while permanent hires join.
Market context: demand for engineers in India
The nasscom–Zinnov GCC landscape report counts 2,117 Global Capability Centres in India in FY26, across 3,728 units employing about 2.36 million people. In FY24, nasscom–Zinnov put engineering R&D at $36.4 bn of $64.6 bn in GCC revenue, so much of that work is engineering, not IT support. See GCC engineering hiring.
nasscom puts India's engineering R&D services revenue at about $63 bn in FY26 and projects it to pass $100 bn by 2030. In semiconductors, the Union Cabinet approved Semicon 2.0 on 15 July 2026 with an outlay of ₹1,27,500 crore and talent as one of its six pillars, and Xpheno counted about 3,400 active semiconductor openings in early 2026, led by design, physical design and verification roles.
In defence, the Ministry of Defence reported record production of ₹1.78 lakh crore in FY26, up 15.6%, with the private sector at about 24%. Indigenised LRUs and sub-systems need embedded, test and qualification engineers. In automotive, UNECE R155 and R156 have applied to all new vehicles under EU type approval since July 2024, adding cybersecurity and software-update work to every programme.

Frequently asked questions
What engineering staffing services does Stalwart provide?
We provide staff augmentation, contract-to-hire, permanent recruitment and dedicated engineering teams for automotive, embedded, semiconductor and defence & aerospace roles. Where you need test results rather than headcount, we also run managed testing, and for a long-term centre we offer Build-Operate-Transfer.
What is the difference between staff augmentation and a dedicated team?
With staff augmentation, individual engineers join your team and you direct their work in your process. With a dedicated team, we provide a complete team, including a lead, and manage its delivery against your roadmap. Augmentation suits filling gaps in a team you already run; a dedicated team suits adding a capability you do not yet manage yourself.
How long does it take to hire an embedded or VLSI engineer in India?
The search is often shorter than the notice period. Hiring guides such as Quantalent's put notice periods at about 30 days for juniors, 60 for mid-level engineers and 60 to 90 for seniors. We give you each candidate's notice period and likely joining date at shortlist stage, and a contract engineer who is available sooner can cover the gap.
How do you vet AUTOSAR, ISO 26262 or DO-178C experience?
Practising engineers in the same discipline interview each candidate on real work: configuring a BSW module, deriving safety requirements from a HARA or closing structural coverage at a given DAL. We ask what work products the candidate produced and how they were audited. The full process is on how we vet engineers.
Who owns the IP created by contract engineers?
You do, under the terms we agree in the contract. Engineers sign confidentiality and IP assignment terms with us, and our contract with you assigns the work product to you. Engineers work inside your repositories, licences and security controls, so design data stays in your environment.
What happens if a placed engineer leaves mid-project?
Replacement terms are written into the contract before the engagement starts. We hold regular check-ins with you and the engineer so problems surface early, and if a replacement is needed we restart the search with what we learned about the role. Handover documentation is agreed with your team lead.
Can engineers work on site at our Bengaluru, Pune or Hyderabad facility?
Yes. Engineers can work on site at your facility, from our Bengaluru office or remotely, depending on your security policy, lab needs and hardware access. Embedded, HIL and post-silicon roles usually need bench access, so on-site work is common. The arrangement is agreed for each role before the engineer starts.
Can you supply test engineers and also run the testing?
Yes. You can hire test engineers into your own team, or give us a defined test scope through managed testing services, where we own execution, evidence and reporting. Many teams start with one and add the other as the programme grows.
Tell us the roles, seniority and start date. A practice lead replies with matched profiles.
