How hiring works
01
Role brief
We confirm the item or product, target ASIL or SIL, which ISO 26262 parts the role covers, the tool chain, your assessor arrangement and the engagement model.
02
Technical screening by practising engineers
Practising safety engineers walk each candidate through a HARA, FMEDA or safety-concept exercise drawn from your brief, and probe how they defended work products at review. The method is set out on how we vet engineers.
03
Shortlist with written assessment
The shortlist includes a written assessment per candidate listing the work products authored, ASIL levels, assessments supported, notice period and joining date.
04
Your interviews
You interview the shortlisted engineers and decide. We coordinate panels with your safety manager.
05
Onboarding and follow-up
We handle contracts and onboarding, then check in regularly with you and the engineer after the start.
Engagement options
- Staff augmentation: safety engineers on contract for a concept phase or assessment push
- Contract-to-hire: convert to your payroll on terms agreed in the contract
- Permanent recruitment: safety managers and leads you employ directly
- Dedicated engineering teams: a safety analysis pod across several ECUs
- Independent verification and validation: an independent check of safety work products
Why functional safety engineers are hard to hire
UST argues the scarcest automotive profiles combine software with functional safety, cybersecurity or validation knowledge, and safety engineers sit on every software-defined vehicle and EV programme. India's EV sales reached 2.55 million in FY26 according to IESA, and every BMS and traction inverter needs FMEDA and safety concepts. The third edition of ISO 26262 is expected to address AI and machine learning, so engineers who also understand SOTIF and data-driven validation are in particular demand.
Buyers want engineers who have authored work products and defended them in assessments, not people who have read the standard. Senior safety engineers in India commonly serve 60 to 90 days' notice and attract counter-offers. Contract-to-hire lets an available engineer start the concept phase while a permanent hire joins. See the wider automotive engineering staffing page for related roles, and try the ASIL calculator for a quick HARA check.

Frequently asked questions
What do functional safety engineers do on an ISO 26262 project?
They define the item, run hazard analysis and risk assessment, assign ASILs, write functional and technical safety concepts, perform FMEA, FTA and FMEDA, and build the safety case. Safety software engineers add software safety requirements and verification. Which of these you need depends on your role in the supply chain and the ASIL.
How do you vet ISO 26262 experience?
Practising safety engineers ask candidates to work through a HARA or FMEDA exercise and to explain work products they authored, the ASIL, and how review or assessment findings were closed. The written assessment states which ISO 26262 parts each candidate has worked in and whether they have supported a confirmation review or assessment.
Do you place SOTIF and IEC 61508 engineers too?
Yes. SOTIF specialists work on ISO 21448 triggering conditions, scenario coverage and validation targets for ADAS and automated driving. IEC 61508 engineers work on industrial controllers and machinery. Many safety engineers have both automotive and industrial experience, and the assessment states which standard they have applied in practice.
How soon can a functional safety engineer start?
It depends on notice period, which commonly runs 60 to 90 days at senior levels in India. We state each candidate's notice and likely joining date on the shortlist. If the concept phase cannot wait, an engineer available on contract can start while a permanent hire serves notice.
Can one engineer cover safety and cybersecurity?
Some can, and the overlap between ISO 26262 and ISO/SAE 21434 is growing. For ASIL C or D items with significant attack surface, most programmes keep the roles separate so each gets enough depth. See hire automotive cybersecurity engineers for the security side.
What if the engineer is not the right fit?
Replacement terms are agreed in the contract before the engagement starts. Regular check-ins with you and the engineer are meant to catch problems early, and if a replacement is needed we restart the search with a sharper brief.
Who owns the safety work products the engineer creates?
IP ownership and confidentiality are written into the contract before work starts, so the analyses, safety concepts and safety case belong to the party the contract names, normally you. Engineers sign your NDAs and work in your requirements and safety tools.
