How engineering staff augmentation works
01
Role brief
We agree the actual work, standards, tools, seniority, location and start date with your hiring manager.
02
Sourcing and technical screening
Practising engineers interview candidates on real problems from the domain. See how we vet engineers.
03
Your interview and selection
You interview the shortlist, see our screening notes and choose the engineer.
04
Onboarding
We issue the employment contract, complete documentation and coordinate access to your systems, licences and lab.
05
Ongoing support
Regular check-ins with you and the engineer, timesheets and invoicing, extensions and replacements on contract terms.
What you manage and what Stalwart handles
| Area | You | Stalwart |
|---|---|---|
| Technical direction | Tasks, priorities, code and design reviews, acceptance of work | Escalation support if the role or expectations need resetting |
| Employment | Nothing: the engineer is not on your payroll | Employment contract, salary, benefits and leave administration |
| Compliance | Your site, security and IP policies | Statutory payroll deductions and filings, confidentiality and IP assignment terms |
| Onboarding | System accounts, tool licences, lab and hardware access | Documentation, joining formalities and first-week coordination |
| Continuity | Early feedback on fit and performance | Replacements and handover according to the contract |
When staff augmentation fits
- A programme peak, such as integration or a release, needs more engineers than your headcount plan allows
- You need a niche skill for months, not years: an AUTOSAR MCAL integrator, a UVM verification engineer or a DO-178C verification engineer
- A certification or audit sprint for ISO 26262, ASPICE or DO-178C needs experienced hands quickly
- Your permanent hire is serving a long notice period and the work cannot wait
- Your team owns the plan and the process, and only needs capacity or skills
Risks and how we reduce them
| Risk | Mitigation |
|---|---|
| Engineer does not match the real work | Role brief with the hiring manager and screening by practising engineers on domain problems, not keyword matches |
| Engineer leaves mid-project | Replacement terms in the contract, regular check-ins and agreed handover documentation |
| IP and confidentiality exposure | Confidentiality and IP assignment terms with the engineer; work stays in your repositories and under your access controls |
| Slow ramp-up on your toolchain | Screening for your specific tools and platforms, and a clear note where ramp-up time applies |
| Knowledge locked in contractors | Documentation expectations agreed upfront, and the option to convert through contract-to-hire |
Staff augmentation compared with outsourcing
| Question | Staff augmentation | Project outsourcing or managed testing |
|---|---|---|
| Who directs the work? | You | Stalwart, against an agreed scope |
| What do you pay for? | Engineer time | Deliverables, milestones or test results |
| Whose process is used? | Yours | Ours, aligned to your standards and review gates |
| Who carries delivery risk? | You | Shared, as set out in the statement of work |
| Best when | You own the plan and need people | You want an outcome, such as a test campaign or a module |
Frequently asked questions
What is engineering staff augmentation?
Engineering staff augmentation places engineers in your team without you hiring them. We employ them and handle payroll, compliance and replacements; they work on your projects under your technical leadership, with your tools and processes. The glossary entry on staff augmentation covers the term in more detail.
What is the difference between staff augmentation and a dedicated team?
Augmented engineers join your existing team and you manage them. A dedicated engineering team is a complete team with its own lead that we manage against your roadmap. Augmentation fills gaps in a team you run; a dedicated team adds a capability you do not want to manage day to day.
How long does it take to get an augmented engineer started?
It depends mainly on availability, not on our process. Engineers who are between assignments can start soon after selection, while engineers currently employed elsewhere must serve their notice period, which hiring guides such as Quantalent's put at 60 to 90 days for seniors. We state each candidate's likely start date at shortlist stage.
Who owns the IP created by augmented engineers?
You do, as set out in our contract with you. Each engineer signs confidentiality and IP assignment terms with us, and the work product is assigned to you. Engineers work inside your repositories, tool licences and access controls, so source code and design data stay in your environment.
What happens if an augmented engineer leaves mid-project?
Replacement terms are agreed in the contract before the engineer starts. We keep regular contact with you and the engineer to catch problems early, agree handover documentation with your team lead, and restart sourcing immediately if a replacement is needed, using what we learned about the role.
Can augmented engineers work on site at our facility?
Yes. Engineers can work at your facility in Bengaluru, Pune, Hyderabad or elsewhere, from our Bengaluru office, or remotely. Roles that need HIL rigs, boards, debuggers or lab instruments usually work on site. The working arrangement is agreed per role before the engineer starts.
Can an augmented engineer convert to our payroll?
Yes, if conversion terms are part of the contract. That is a contract-to-hire engagement: the engineer starts on our payroll, and after an agreed period you can make a permanent offer. Conversion timing and any fee are written into the contract at the start.
Can you supply engineers for US projects with export-control restrictions?
Our delivery is from India by default. Work under ITAR or EAR controls usually needs US persons and specific access controls, so we confirm at the role-brief stage whether a role can be staffed compliantly and say so plainly if it cannot. We keep India-delivered and US-delivered scope separate.
